Minimum Requirements for Unarmed Security Guards in Iowa

The state of Iowa does not require individual security guards to be licensed, but does license private security agencies. Per Iowa Administrative Code 661-121.5(80A), licensees and individual security guards must meet these minimum qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Not be a peace officer (except a reserve peace officer)
  • Never have been convicted of a felony or aggravated misdemeanor
  • Not be an abuser of alcohol or a controlled substance
  • Not have a history of repeated acts of violence
  • Be of good moral character
  • Not been convicted of any crime involving assault, willful injury, administering harmful substances, intimidation with a dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, or spring guns and traps
  • Not been convicted of illegally using, carrying, or possessing a dangerous weapon
  • Not have a history of mental illness or instability

A licensed private security agency must register each employee with the state by completing an Identification Card Application, submitting current photographs of the employee, and two fingerprint cards for completing a background check. Each employee will receive an employee identification card.
